Emma, who has been candid about Bruce’s health journey since his diagnosis was revealed in February 2023, emphasizes the importance of community and support in tough times. After Bruce’s initial diagnosis with aphasia in 2022, he stepped back from acting, a decision publicly shared by the family.
The couple, married since 2009, now shares two young daughters, Mabel and Evelyn, alongside Bruce’s three daughters from his previous marriage. Emma recently participated in the End Well 2025 conference in Los Angeles, where she discussed the challenges of juggling caregiving for a spouse and children.
"I’m caring for two young daughters, as well as my husband Bruce, as well as his aging mother, as well as mine… We’re in a very privileged position," she remarked. "It’s almost like you have to be a Hollywood icon movie star to be able to afford it."
Despite significant challenges, Emma speaks positively about their family life, focusing on the joyful moments they continue to share. "I think for us, it’s just about me being able to be there and be present with him," she said. "I mean, our life is very simple. It always actually has been."
As the family looks toward the holidays, Emma acknowledges the adjustments required for families dealing with dementia but emphasizes the importance of finding joy. "You have to learn and adapt and make new memories, bringing in the same traditions that you had before," she said. "Life goes on. It just goes on. Dementia is hard, but there is still joy in it. I think it’s important that we don’t paint such a negative picture around dementia."
Emma concluded, "We are still laughing. There is still joy. It just looks different."
