Dominic Rains from Chicago Med Joins the Cast of Starz’s New Crime Drama Power: Origins
Dominic Rains Joins Cast of New "Power" Universe Series
Dominic Rains, known for his role on Chicago Med, has been added to the recurring cast of Power: Origins, the latest installment of the "Power" Universe currently in production in New York and New Jersey.
Starz describes this new spinoff prequel as "a fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time period in the ‘Power’ franchise," focusing on the audacity of young men as they strive for legendary status in the game.
Power: Origins centers on the formative years of iconic characters James “Ghost” St. James, portrayed by Omari Hardwick in the original series, and Tommy Egan, played by Joseph Sikora. Their younger counterparts will be portrayed by Spence Moore II and Charlie Mann, respectively. The character of Kanan Stark, originally played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, will be reinterpreted in Power: Origins by Mekai Curtis, continuing from his role in Raising Kanan.
The narrative follows these ambitious young men as they attempt to establish themselves in the streets of New York City.
Rains will portray Detective Fred Drexel, who, following a contentious incident within the NYPD, is thrust into the complexities of an intense investigation. Sources indicate that this storyline may lead to turbulent developments.
Joining Rains in the cast are Jason Dirden, returning as Traymont Stinson from Raising Kanan; Jennifer Ferrin as Tommy’s mother, Kate Egan; Lizzy DeClement as nurse Jill Wexler; and Lenny Platt as finance professional Lenny Seidell. Additional cast members include Armani Gabriel as J-Boogs, a trusted ally of Ghost and Tommy, and Everett Osborne as NY Jets tight end Omay Moreau.
Recurring roles will feature Kelly McCreary as Officer Melanie Rivers, Hill Harper as Detective Burns, and Nadia Dajani, reprising her role as Teresa Boselli from Power Book III: Raising Kanan. Other notable cast members include Damon Gupton as Detective Glover Archibald and Tonya Pinkins as Grandma Charlayne, Ghost’s loving grandmother.
It is anticipated that Detective Drexel, played by Rains, will collaborate closely with characters portrayed by McCreary, Harper, and Gupton.
Currently, Power: Origins is the sole show in the “Power” Universe in production, following the conclusion of Power Book II: Ghost in 2024, and the recent end of Power Book IV: Force, which recently wrapped up its three-season run. Power Book III: Raising Kanan will conclude with its fifth season, anticipated later this year. As the past timeline is explored through Power: Origins, the present narrative remains uncertain, although future developments are already being established.
In the finale of Force, Tommy reunites with his nephew Tariq St. James, who helps him escape a perilous situation. The scene closes with Tariq proposing a partnership in New York, presenting Tommy with a tempting but complex opportunity amid his success in Chicago.
A new present timeline series, tentatively titled Power: Legacy, has been in the works since last summer. It is being developed by Power executive producer Gary Lennon and writer/producer Kendra Chapman, both of whom are set to serve as executive producers.
Information regarding the production of Power: Origins reveals a likely greenlight, pending the completion of formalities.
Sascha Penn, associated with Power Book III: Raising Kanan, will serve as showrunner and executive producer of Power: Origins, working from a pilot co-written with Power creator Courtney Kemp. The project is being produced by Lionsgate Television for Starz.
Rains previously played Dr. Crockett Marcel on NBC’s Chicago Med, from seasons five to nine. His character departed after a tragic incident involving the death of a young patient. Before this role, Rains was featured in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as in films such as Jinn, Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, The Mad Whale, Modern Persuasion, and The Institute. He also served as associate producer for the film All That’s Left of You, directed by Cherien Dabis, and is represented by Robert Stein Management and Artium Talent.
