Dodgers Trade for Outfielder Alek Thomas from the Diamondbacks
Dodgers Acquire Outfield Prospect Alek Thomas in Trade with Diamondbacks
The Los Angeles Dodgers have bolstered their outfield depth by acquiring Alek Thomas from the Arizona Diamondbacks, a deal confirmed on Tuesday.
Thomas, who recently struggled at the plate, was batting .181 with two home runs and ten RBIs before being designated for assignment last week by Arizona. Despite his recent performance, he is recognized for his speed and defensive capabilities, making him a potential asset for the Dodgers as a late-inning defensive replacement or pinch runner.
"Really good defender. Really good kid, like the way he plays," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts commented. "We’ve seen him a lot, obviously from the other side. Not sure what our plans are for him." He also indicated that the team intends to conduct a thorough analysis of Thomas’s swing to determine how to enhance his performance.
To accommodate Thomas on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers traded outfield prospect Jose Requena to the Diamondbacks and designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment.
Drafted in the second round of the 2018 amateur draft by Arizona, Thomas made his major league debut in 2022. He stood out during the Diamondbacks’ journey to the 2023 World Series, hitting four home runs in the postseason, which included a pivotal two-run homer in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series.
At 26 years old, Thomas holds a career batting average of .230, with 31 home runs, 143 RBIs, and 28 stolen bases over 448 games.
