Marion Cotillard Shares Her Cannes Experience: Balancing Roles in Karma and Roma Elastica While Embracing Motherhood
Marion Cotillard Returns to Cannes with New Films Amid Ongoing Career Evolution
Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard graces the Cannes Film Festival once again, showcasing her talents in Guillaume Canet’s Karma and Bertrand Mandico’s Roma Elastica. These latest entries increase her tally of films selected for Cannes to 16 since her debut in 2011, with eight featuring in the competition. Notable past films include Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone and Leos Carax’s Annette. In Karma, Cotillard portrays a woman grappling with a troubled past, whose life is turned upside down by a child’s disappearance. Meanwhile, Roma Elastica depicts an actress navigating a chaotic film shoot in 1980s Rome. Reflecting on her roles, Cotillard emphasized her eagerness for challenging characters during this transitional phase in her life.
In an interview, Cotillard discussed her long-standing connection to the Cannes Film Festival, which she began attending nearly every year since the late 1990s. She recalled her childhood fascination with the event: “When I was a kid, it was kind of a dream to see what was happening during the festival. The first time I came, I was so excited to be part of this very magical place.”
When asked whether she manages to watch films during the festival, she noted: “No… I used to a long time ago when I didn’t have movies in the festival… One of my biggest shocks at the festival was Matthias & Maxime [2019], Xavier Dolan’s movie. I’m a big fan. To this day, it’s one of my favorite movies about love of all time.”
Discussing her role in Karma, Cotillard revealed that the screenplay was written specifically for her by Canet. “He said, ‘I really want to write a movie for you with a very, very strong character, with something different from what you did before,’” she shared. The film presents a compelling character whose past reemerges, leading her to discover strength she didn’t know she possessed.
Cotillard expressed admiration for Canet, whom she has collaborated with six times across various projects. “He’s one of my favorite directors… He’s passionate and precise. Watching him on set is something that I will never be tired of. So, yeah, I really hope we will continue working together.”
Roma Elastica, directed by Mandico, ventures into a distinct realm of creativity. Cotillard described the script as unconventional and artistic, recalling her initial uncertainty before reading it. “I loved the character right away, the way it was written, the dialogue, everything,” she noted.
The cast of Roma Elastica features a combination of renowned Italian actors, which Cotillard found enriching. “They all have, like, crazy, beautiful and very peculiar characters. I was so happy to be able to have this connection with Noémie Merlant… She’s more than good, she’s insanely good.”
In discussing her role’s cinematic influences, Cotillard referenced the freedom of creativity celebrated in Italian cinema: “The film is very much an homage to Italian cinema and the freedom of creativity and craziness that Italian movies once had.”
Reflecting on her experiences at Cinecittà, where Karma was filmed, she acknowledged the significance of shooting in a location steeped in cinematic history. “There’s this very special feeling about filming there because of all the masterpieces that shot there in the past.”
Beyond the festival circuit, Cotillard has appeared in the fourth season of The Morning Show as Celine Dumont, engaging in complex dynamics with characters played by Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. However, when asked if her character will return for a fifth season, she declined to comment.
Amid her busy schedule, Cotillard was recently honored with a selection for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as part of the Class of 2026. She expressed her surprise and gratitude for the recognition, noting, "When it happened, it touched my heart."
Looking ahead, Cotillard is eager to expand her filmography. “Now [my children] are bigger and I want to do more movies. I have some amazing projects coming my way,” she revealed. Notably, she mentioned her involvement in Nicole Garcia’s Milo and Yuval Adler’s Job, which is set to begin filming in the coming year.
Cotillard’s evolution as an artist also includes a desire to explore producing and possibly directing. “With both, I bring the dream of a creator to life,” she observed, hinting at various untitled projects in the pipeline.
As the festival continues, Cotillard’s acute awareness of fashion and her anticipation for her red carpet appearances are evident. “I have the privilege to work with amazing artists,” she remarked, expressing confidence in her upcoming collaboration with Chanel’s new creative director.
This festival season, Cotillard substantiates her remarkable legacy, continuing to challenge herself and captivate audiences worldwide.
