Man Fatally Shot by Police Officer in Chino During Traffic Stop
CHINO, Calif. — The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has initiated an investigation following a shooting incident in Chino on Wednesday night that left a suspect dead.
Authorities reported that the event unfolded around 9:50 p.m. on January 21 in the 12800 block of Central Avenue, close to Riverside Drive. Chino police officers conducted a traffic stop involving a female driver and a male passenger. Officers requested the male passenger to exit the vehicle, which subsequently led to a confrontation.
According to Chino Police officials, “The male passenger drew a concealed firearm and fired at least one round. One officer returned fire, striking the subject.” The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In addition to the suspect, one officer sustained injuries during the incident and has since been treated and released from the hospital. Investigators reported recovery of a handgun at the scene.
As of now, the names of the suspect and the injured officer have not been disclosed. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, alongside the District Attorney’s office, will conduct a thorough criminal investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
