Charlie Cox Shares Insights on Disney’s Changes to ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and Thanks Marvel for Their Support
Charlie Cox Discusses Creative Collaboration for Daredevil: Born Again
Charlie Cox recently expressed his appreciation for Marvel’s openness to creative input as he prepares for the debut of Daredevil: Born Again, alongside co-star Vincent D’Onofrio. In a discussion with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Cox emphasized their mutual "indebtedness" to the studio for considering their ideas.
Following the 2023 WGA strike, Daredevil: Born Again underwent significant revisions after early assessments deemed the revival unsatisfactory. Cox reflected on the adjustments during their interview, indicating that there was an “admirable effort” to reshape the approach compared to the original three-season series that aired on Netflix.
Cox noted a prevailing industry belief that traditional television models were fading, stating, “People love those shows. They’re incredibly addictive; they’re really easy to watch; they’re very, very well written. It’s very difficult to write a well-written procedural.” He recounted that Marvel executives were eager to adopt aspects of the successful network format for the streaming platform Disney+.
Reflecting on the character of Matt Murdock, Cox asserted that the portrayal would work best within the darker, serialized context that emphasized gritty storytelling over lighter tones. He stated, “Once we got into production, it very quickly became apparent… the character really does work best in a serialized platform, but also when it’s darker and grittier.”
He praised Marvel’s willingness to pivot directionally, acknowledging the courage and financial investment required to change course. “We’re indebted to them, and they really did listen to Vincent and I,” he added.
While Cox remained tight-lipped about details regarding the ongoing production of Season 3 and a potential Defenders reunion, he did share that he begins the next installment with a beard, although he admitted to being cautious about revealing too much. On the topic of future crossovers, he mentioned that Marvel has indicated for the moment that his focus should remain on Daredevil: Born Again.
