Boots Riley Encourages ‘I Love Boosters’ Fans to Support the Film This Opening Weekend
Following its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival, director Boots Riley is seeking to boost the box office performance of his latest feature, I Love Boosters. The film is set to open in theaters on May 22.
Over the weekend, Riley took to social media to engage with fans, urging them to support the film’s release. “Hundreds of people put a lot of work into I Love Boosters—we need everyone to see it! In theaters—May 22!” he stated on X. His message comes as fans express their desire to see the Neon title screened in local theaters.
In response to a follower’s inquiry about the lack of showings at an arthouse cinema, Riley advised, “If you call and tell them you and your friends want the movie, they’ll get it. People on here have reported it working out when they did. Theaters are guessing otherwise.”
Riley emphasized the importance of the film’s opening weekend, urging fans to attend sooner rather than later. “IF YOU WAIT TIL JUNE, ITS GAME OVER FOR I LOVE BOOSTERS,” he warned in a tweet, adding, “WE HAVE TO HAVE EVERYONE GO SEE THIS ON THE WEEKEND OF MAY 22ND OR THEY START PULLING IT OFF OF SCREENS. Please please celebrate your birthday on the weekend of May 22nd! :-)”
Addressing concerns about the film’s suitability for younger audiences, Riley noted that while he believes it may not be appropriate for a ten-year-old due to its explicit content, he humorously reassured viewers: “It’s ok to see I Love Boosters with your parents. They are more expert at sex than you are. Just don’t look over at them during said scenes.”
Starring Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, Taylour Paige, and Poppy Liu as a band of professional shoplifters, I Love Boosters revolves around their exploits targeting the ruthless fashion mogul Christie Smith, portrayed by Demi Moore. The cast also features Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, Don Cheadle, Jason Ritter, and Eric André, among others.
With anticipation building around its release, the success of I Love Boosters hinges on strong audience turnout during its opening weekend.
