Freida McFadden Books Coming to the Big Screen: From The Housemaid to The Teacher
Author Freida McFadden Transitions from Medicine to Thrilling Narratives, with Upcoming Film Adaptations
Freida McFadden, a physician turned acclaimed author, has made a name for herself in the world of psychological thrillers. Writing under her pen name, McFadden is the creative force behind popular novels including The Housemaid, The Boyfriend, The Crash, and more. Her work is now making the leap to the big screen, with three of her novels in various stages of film development. The adaptation of The Housemaid is set to premiere in theaters on December 19.
McFadden is not just a passive participant in the adaptation process; she is serving as an executive producer for the films, ensuring her vision remains intact.
‘The Housemaid’ – Lionsgate
Directed by Paul Feig, The Housemaid is the first of McFadden’s novels to be adapted for film. It stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, the titular character, alongside Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, Millie’s employer. Brandon Sklenar, recently seen in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us, portrays Andrew Winchester, while Michele Morrone plays the gardener Enzo. The narrative intertwines elements of thriller and horror, reflecting a descent into madness. Published in 2022, The Housemaid also inspired a successful trilogy, including The Housemaid’s Secret and The Housemaid Is Watching, as well as a short story titled The Housemaid’s Wedding.
‘The Tenant’ – Amazon MGM
Another adaptation in the pipeline is The Tenant, with Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt producing for Universal Acquisition (UA), alongside Molly Sims from Something Happy Productions. The project is overseen by SVP Olivia Heighten and Director of Development Annie McCreery for UA, with Gaby McCormick handling oversight for Something Happy Productions.

‘The Teacher’ – Apple Original Films
The Teacher will also receive an adaptation, with Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg set to adapt the novel. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones will produce for Range, while Cohen, Halberg, and McFadden will serve as executive producers. Apple Studios will handle the film production.

‘Dear Debbie’
Additionally, Dear Debbie is being developed as a television series with Amazon MGM Studios. Gina Girolamo, known for her work on You and Pretty Little Liars, is attached as executive producer. The story follows Debbie, a wife, mother, and advice columnist, who seeks revenge after enduring a series of injustices.

‘The Surrogate Mother’
Lastly, Sony has secured film adaptation rights for The Surrogate Mother, a narrative centered around Abby, a woman frustrated by years of unsuccessful adoptions and infertility treatments. Her assistant Monica may hold the key to fulfilling Abby’s dream of motherhood. Anna Klassen will write the screenplay, with Marc Evans producing.

With McFadden’s novels attracting a growing audience, her transition from medicine to literature appears to be a successful one, capturing the intrigue of readers and filmmakers alike.
