Billie Eilish Calls for Gun Control Following Recent Shootings in the U.S. and Australia: A Reminder to Speak Up
Billie Eilish Calls for Gun Control Following Tragic Week of Shootings
Billie Eilish has renewed her push for gun control in response to a tragic series of shootings this week. The Grammy-winning artist took to social media on Sunday, December 14, to honor the victims and stress the importance of voting for change amid a backdrop of violence.
In an Instagram Story, Eilish highlighted the grim significance of the date, stating, “Today is the anniversary of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, & we woke up to the news of mass shootings in Australia, at Brown University, & in Brooklyn.”
“This is so devastating,” she added. “My heart goes out to all of the victims & their loved ones.”
Eilish urged her followers to become active participants in advocating for reform, stating, “Raise your voice, work for change, & vote out anyone who’s not willing to reform gun policy.”
The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, when a gunman entered the school and killed 26 people, including 20 children aged 6 to 7. Thirteen years later, the world witnessed three violent attacks in a single day. A gunman opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, resulting in at least 15 deaths. In Brooklyn, six teenagers were shot at a birthday party, and a shooting at Brown University left two people dead and nine others injured, with authorities still searching for the suspect.
Eilish has been a long-time advocate for stricter gun laws in the United States. In 2023, she joined The Artist for Action to Prevent Gun Violence coalition, which includes prominent artists such as Sheryl Crow, Peter Gabriel, and Rufus Wainwright.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the U.S. has seen a total of 392 mass shootings in 2025 alone, underscoring the urgency behind Eilish’s message.
