BBC to Air Documentary Inspired by the Podcast: Miriam Margolyes Made Me Me
EXCLUSIVE: Miriam Margolyes Made Me Me is set to premiere on BBC Two. This one-off documentary follows the esteemed British actress as she experiences a resurgence in her career. Created by BAFTA-winning director Simon Draper, the film was shot over two years using his phone, culminating in a compelling 60-minute feature now available on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer in the UK.
What began as a concept for a podcast evolved into a full-fledged documentary. Draper, known for his work on Rob & Rylan’s Grand Tour, initially intended to create an audio series highlighting Margolyes’ candid reflections on her life and career.
As production progressed, Draper became an integral part of Margolyes’ world, transforming the project into a chaotic exploration of their friendship, rather than merely a podcast.
Originally, the podcast was envisioned as Margolyes’ farewell project. However, she found herself enjoying a wave of renewed popularity, engaging in activities such as a book tour in Australia, reconnecting with old friends, and even visiting the Queen, all of which Draper documented.
“I thought getting Miriam Margolyes to make a podcast would be easy. After all, everyone’s doing them, but Miriam’s lifestyle is bonkers,” Draper remarked. “In two years, we made just five episodes, but hanging out with her was life-changing. Mim’s a woman with strong opinions and a weak bladder, and I feel lucky to have been able to capture all the chaos and sparkle of the bravest, most honest person I know.”
Rex TV joined the project as it transitioned from podcast to documentary. Lana Salah, Creative Director at Rex TV, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “When I started Rex I wanted to make TV with heart and humor, so when Simon brought me this project, I knew I had to help get it finished and in front of an audience. We all love Miriam, but what Simon managed to capture is something rare, moving and hilariously funny.”
Miriam Margolyes Made Me Me was procured for the BBC by Jo Lapping, Head of Factual Acquisition, and is scheduled to air on BBC Two and iPlayer in the spring. The documentary is produced by Rex TV, which is part of the Zinc Media production and distribution group. International distribution will be handled by Zinc Distribution, which plans to showcase the film at MIP London later this month.
