Charlize Theron Responds to Timothée Chalamet’s Comments, Addressing AI’s Role in Performing Arts
Charlize Theron Critiques Timothée Chalamet’s Comments on Ballet and Opera
Charlize Theron has expressed strong disapproval of Timothée Chalamet’s recent remarks regarding ballet and opera, labeling them as "very reckless." During an interview with The New York Times, the Oscar-winning actress highlighted the irreplaceable nature of the classical performing arts in light of Chalamet’s comments about artificial intelligence potentially replacing actors.
Theron, known for her role in Monster, emphasized the intense dedication required in dance. "Dance is probably one of the hardest things I ever did. Dancers are superheroes. What they put their bodies through in complete silence," she remarked, underlining her respect for the discipline.
When reporter Lulu Garcia-Navarro lightheartedly mentioned Chalamet, Theron responded, “Oh, boy, I hope I run into him one day. I feel like that was a very reckless comment on an art form, two art forms, that we need to lift up constantly… In about 10 years, I think AI is going to be able to do Timothée’s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live. And we shouldn’t shit on other art forms. How about we start with that?”
Further reflecting on her background in dance, Theron said, “I think that [dance is] one of the most disciplined things that I’ve done. It taught me discipline. It taught me structure. It taught me hard work. It taught me to be tough.” She recounted the physical toll of dance, noting, “There were several times that I had blood infections from blisters that just never healed. And you don’t get a day off. I’m literally talking about bleeding through your shoes.”
Chalamet found himself in controversy earlier this month for stating that “no one cares” about ballet and opera, expressing a desire not to be a niche artist. The backlash led to a flurry of invitations from ballet and opera companies. Additionally, he faced criticism from peers, some of whom made sharper remarks than others. The uproar even reached the Oscars stage, where host Conan O’Brien quipped, “Security is extremely tight tonight. I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities.”
In a humorous reflection post-Academy Awards, The Daily Show host Jon Stewart remarked on Chalamet’s defeat to Michael B. Jordan in the Best Actor category, saying, “As of last night, it is clear that opera and ballet have defeated Timothée Chalamet. No contest. A knockout!”
Theron’s comments and the ongoing conversation surrounding Chalamet signal a larger discourse about the value of classical arts in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.
