Arnold Schwarzenegger and Christopher McQuarrie Team Up for a New Conan the Barbarian Film at 20th Century Studios
Arnold Schwarzenegger Announces New Film ‘King Conan’ at Arnold Sports Festival
During a recent appearance at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed exciting news about the upcoming film King Conan. Representatives for 20th Century Studios declined to provide further comment on the project.
Schwarzenegger described King Conan as a continuation of the classic narrative, stating, "It’s a great old story that Conan was forty years as King, and now he gets forced out of the kingdom, and there’s conflict, of course, but somehow he comes back, and there’s all kinds of madness, violence, magic, and creatures and stuff like that."
Originally created by Robert E. Howard, Conan the Barbarian first appeared in Weird Tales magazine in the 1930s. The character is known as a formidable warrior who navigates through brutal battles, political intrigues, and supernatural threats in the fictional Hyborian Age.
Schwarzenegger’s journey with the character began in 1982 with the release of the first Conan film, which solidified his status as a leading action star following his bodybuilding success. In this original installment, Conan seeks revenge against the cult leader Thulsa Doom, portrayed by James Earl Jones. The film grossed over $68 million worldwide, earning a reputation as a cult classic. This success led to a sequel, Conan the Destroyer, in 1984. Although plans for a third film, Conan the Conqueror, were made in the late 1980s, they ultimately did not materialize. Universal Pictures produced the first two films, while Lionsgate attempted to reboot the franchise in 2011, featuring Jason Momoa. Despite grossing over $63 million, the reboot did not receive a favorable response, resulting in the cancellation of further sequels.
Schwarzenegger is currently seen in the Netflix series Fubar, with the Amazon MGM Christmas action-comedy The Man with the Bag on the horizon. He is represented by UTA, Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, and Lavely & Singer.
In the world of filmmaking, Christopher McQuarrie, coming off the success of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which grossed nearly $600 million worldwide, is represented by Greenberg Glusker.
