Born in Daegu, Ahn began acting as a child at the tender age of six in the 1957 film Twilight Train. He later starred in significant works such as Silmido, Radio Star, Mandala, and A Fine, Windy Day, the latter earning him the Best New Actor award at the Grand Bell Awards in 1980, an accolade often compared to the Oscars in South Korea. His final film was Birth, released in 2022.
Throughout his impressive career, Ahn received numerous accolades and was deeply cherished in his home country. Although the press often referred to him as “the nation’s actor,” Ahn expressed a preference for being viewed as just another film actor.
Tributes have poured in following his passing, including a heartfelt message from Korean President Lee Jae Myung. On Facebook, the President noted that Ahn “left a big footprint on Korean film history and cultural arts,” adding, “I already miss his warm smile and gentle voice.”
The Artist Company announced that Ahn’s funeral will take place on Friday at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Funeral Hall. He is survived by his wife and two children.
