Alex Honnold’s Climb at Taipei 101 Gains 6.2M Views on Netflix, Ranking No. 3 in Weekly English TV Shows
Alex Honnold made headlines on Saturday by successfully scaling Taipei 101, one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers, without the use of a rope. The live event, which captured the climber’s extraordinary feat, drew a considerable audience for Netflix.
The free-solo climber’s ascent aired at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET, accumulating 6.2 million streaming views through the end of Netflix’s measurement interval on Sunday. This viewership places the event third among English TV shows for the week of January 19 to 25, according to the platform’s metrics.
This audience size reflects a noteworthy interest in Honnold’s achievement, which fulfilled a lifelong dream and set a record for the tallest urban free solo climb globally. While comparisons are challenging due to the unique nature of the event, other live broadcasts provide some context. For example, last summer’s Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano rematch garnered 2.8 million views from its Friday airing through Sunday.

By contrast, Terence Crawford’s victory over Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez in September reached over 17 million streaming views during its live telecast. Additionally, traditional sporting events, such as football games, tend to attract even larger audiences on the platform.
In terms of other top-viewed Netflix offerings from last week, the series His & Hers continued to hold strong at No. 1, registering 17.2 million views. Although this figure is a decline from over 29 million the previous week, it remains consistent with the series’ inaugural viewership total. With 66.6 million views after three weeks, it is on track to potentially challenge The Night Agent Season 1, which stands at 98.2 million views.
Following His & Hers, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials ranked second with 8.7 million views, while Finding Her Edge claimed fourth place with 5.5 million views.
On the film front, The Rip added 40.4 million views, sustaining strong interest akin to its debut week. In comparison, a new documentary titled Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart captured 15.9 million views, securing second place among films.
No Time to Die quickly climbed the rankings on Netflix, taking the No. 3 position with 9.6 million views, while People We Meet on Vacation rounded out the list with 9.3 million views.
