AF Films Partners with Shannon McIntosh and Paula Ortiz for Exciting New Film ‘Brothers Land’ at Cannes Market
Paula Ortiz Announces New Film “Brothers Land” Amidst Spanish Civil War Setting
Spanish filmmaker Paula Ortiz is set to direct her next film, titled Brothers Land. The project will see Ortiz collaborate with AF Films and Shannon McIntosh, a frequent producer for Quentin Tarantino.
Brothers Land is inspired by a 2018 article by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, titled “La Tierra de Nadie” (“No Man’s Land”). This historical drama takes place during the Spanish Civil War and explores the delicate nature of human relationships amid the chaos of war, focusing on the reunion of two brothers fighting on opposing sides.
The narrative follows a young soldier entrenched in battle as he grapples with the pain of loss and the absurdity of conflict. In a trench near the infamous “no man’s land,” he unexpectedly encounters his brother, who is aligned with the enemy. This poignant moment of reconnection serves as the emotional foundation of the film.
Set to explore one of the most tumultuous periods in Spanish history, Brothers Land draws on Pérez-Reverte’s insights as a war correspondent. The acclaimed author is regarded as a significant voice in contemporary Spanish literature and journalism.
“It is a challenge to look at the wound of our history through the story of two brothers forced to fight one another in a corner of my homeland,” Ortiz remarked. Her previous works include The Bride, Teresa, and The Red Virgin.
The film is produced by AF Films in collaboration with McIntosh Films, directed by McIntosh, who has a rich history of partnerships with Tarantino, contributing to films such as Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and The Hateful Eight. Currently, she is engaged in developing a multi-picture slate in partnership with Globe Originals and Universal Music Group.
Founded by Frank Ariza, AF Films has produced a diverse array of projects, including Above and Below, Last Days, Reversión, El vestido, La silla, Fragmentos, and the Sundance sensation Sorry, Baby.
