Celebrate 40 Years of ‘Top Gun’ with Its Special Theatrical Re-Release
Paramount Pictures Announces Re-Release of ‘Top Gun’ for 40th Anniversary
Paramount Pictures is set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the iconic film Top Gun with a special re-release in theaters. The classic will return to cinemas on May 13, screening for one week alongside its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Tom Cruise, the star of both films, shared the news in a post on his social media accounts. “If you feel the need…Two films. One big screen. Back in theaters, May 13th, for one week only,” he wrote, accompanying the announcement with a trailer for the upcoming re-release.
Top Gun: Maverick is notable for being Cruise’s highest-grossing film, having earned $1.49 billion at the box office. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won the Oscar for Best Sound.
This sequel follows Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he returns to the Navy’s elite flight school to mentor a new generation of pilots. The film features Miles Teller as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, a character portrayed by Anthony Edwards in the original 1986 film, who tragically dies during a training exercise.
