A Look at C-SPAN’s Experience During the Unforgettable Night of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner
C-SPAN Captures Chaos at White House Correspondents’ Dinner
During the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, an alarming incident unfolded, leading to an immediate evacuation of high-profile attendees, including President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. The event, known for its glitz and glamour, turned chaotic when shots were fired in the ballroom.
As the evening commenced, C-SPAN utilized a split screen, showcasing mentalist Oz Pearlman performing for the Trumps on one side, while a conversation with former White House Communications Director Michael Dubke occupied the other. However, at precisely 8:34 PM, panic ensued. “Yep. Yep. I see it. Just a second, we have an issue here at the head table,” host Peter Slen announced, cutting abruptly into the conversation, as chaos erupted on the right side of the screen.
C-SPAN, which has historically provided extensive coverage of the dinner, was the sole operator of pool cameras in the ballroom that night. This allowed the network to broadcast the unfolding confusion and uncertainty to viewers.
The scene escalated when Cole Allen was charged on Monday with attempting to assassinate the president after breaching a security checkpoint armed with a rifle. Witnesses reported gunfire in the lobby, prompting a swift response from Secret Service agents, who rushed to evacuate Trump and other officials while guests dropped to the floor or sought cover beneath tables.
C-SPAN’s cameras were strategically placed around the ballroom, with a temporary operations center situated close to where the shots rang out. Bob Reilly, C-SPAN’s field crew chief, recounts hearing what he described as a “cannon going off” before several additional shots followed. “We both said, ‘gunfire,’” he said, confirming the immediate response from his team.
“Gunshots! Gunshots! Camera operators get down,” recalled Randy Rohrbaugh, a field technician, as he shouted instructions over his headset. The urgency prompted Secret Service agents to rush toward the ballroom entrance, guns drawn, while others moved in quickly.
Amid the turmoil, hotel and catering staff sought shelter near the C-SPAN control area. “No one knew where this was taking place,” Reilly noted, as he watched shaken individuals hide beneath the stairs. Assisted by the immediate response of his team, Reilly worked to ensure the safety of camera operators, who remained focused on capturing the scene.
As secretive communications took place between agents, concern grew for the safety of the crew members, some of whom were exposed in raised areas of the venue. However, they continued to provide invaluable coverage as officials were rapidly escorted from the stage.
Minutes later, as the initial shock wore off, attendees began to rise, searching for clarity amidst the chaos. C-SPAN began to intermix footage from various cameras, capturing the distinct responses of attendees as they processed the night’s alarming events.
Among the attendees, C-SPAN hosts Greta Brawner and CEO Sam Feist were close to the dais when the incident unfolded. Brawner described the moment as chaotic, recalling the sounds of a crashing tray followed by the ominous command, “Get down!” She observed as Secret Service agents and armed teams moved strategically through the ballroom.
Brawner noted the eerie silence enveloping the room, with over 2,700 people present. “The only thing you hear is law enforcement yelling and the crashing of glass,” she said.
As the atmosphere began to normalize, Brawner attempted to inform family members of her safety while juggling incoming calls from C-SPAN’s studio. However, cell service proved unreliable due to the turmoil. After maneuvering through blocked exits, she finally reached a location with better coverage and was able to report back to the studio.
“Hey, can I get a ride?” she called out to a passerby with an e-bike, seeking an unconventional escape route back to the studio. Although the experience felt risky, the earlier incident weighed heavily on her mind as she navigated her way through the aftermath.
Brawner, who previously reported on significant events such as January 6, maintained composure in her coverage, emphasizing the importance of accurately portraying the unfolding situation. C-SPAN’s tag line, “Democracy Unfiltered,” came to embody the night as their dedicated crew delivered continuous updates on a surreal evening none would soon forget.
Feist applauded his team for their professionalism and quick response amid a traumatic situation, stating, “I can’t say enough positive things about how impressed I was that they kept doing their jobs. And that’s why the world can see what happened in that room.”
