A Closer Look at Mary Bronstein’s Screenplay: A Mom’s Honest Struggle in Tough Times
Rose Byrne Stars in Compelling New Film: A Journey into Maternal Anxiety
In her latest role, Rose Byrne embodies a therapist grappling with spiraling chaos as her life slips out of control. Faced with her daughter’s mysterious illness, a missing patient, an absentee husband, and her own therapist planning to abandon her, Byrne’s character navigates profound helplessness. Comic legend Conan O’Brien also features in the film, alongside Danielle Macdonald, Christian Slater, A$AP Rocky, and Delaney Quinn.
This film marks the second feature of director Sara Bronstein, following her acclaimed 2028 debut, Yeast, which starred Greta Gerwig. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Bronstein’s latest project has garnered significant recognition, including multiple nominations from the Gotham Awards for both script and direction. Byrne, who received the Leading Performer award at the Berlin Film Festival, is on a nomination streak, featuring prominently in awards discussions for events like the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Gothams, and Spirit Awards.
Bronstein has shared that the film’s premise is rooted in her own experiences as a mother facing family illness. While she emphasizes that the narrative is not autobiographical, she describes it as “emotionally accurate,” providing a sometimes poignant, sometimes humorous glimpse into the life of a mother who feels insufficient across various roles. She aims to depict the anxiety and shame often overlooked in cinematic storytelling.
Developing the screenplay took Bronstein seven years, driven by a strong conviction to bring this project to fruition. “I really felt like I needed to make this movie,” she stated. “I had complete tunnel vision, and honestly, that was the only way to get it done.”
The completed screenplay is available for public reading, shedding light on the intricate emotions stemming from maternal challenges.
