Manolo Blahnik Opens First Southern California Boutique at South Coast Plaza

Renowned Spanish shoe designer Manolo Blahnik is set to open his first boutique in Southern California this month at South Coast Plaza. This new establishment marks a significant milestone for the London-born brand, which has captivated audiences with its unique designs since its inception in 1973.

Blahnik described his passion for beauty, stating, “I want every single person who steps into one of our locations to feel connected to the beauty of our community through our shoes.” The boutique will feature seasonal shoe collections for both men and women, alongside a selection of bags and accessories. The space also includes a full-service coffee bar and showcases various historical artifacts from Blahnik’s illustrious career.

In discussing his decision to open a boutique in the area, Blahnik emphasized his long-standing desire for a California presence, especially after launching in New York. He noted, “South Coast Plaza feels to me both prestigious and comfortable. We have so many fabulously loyal fans on the West Coast, and I am delighted to be able to give them a space in such a renowned locale.”

Regarding the boutique’s design, Blahnik explained that, while each store is distinct, they all share an element of quiet elegance. Collaborating with designer Nick Leith-Smith, he called the new location a “unique jewel box” that embodies a thread of relaxed luxury. A standout feature is a full-scale replica of his personal workspace, adorned with sketches, photographs, and art materials that inspire him daily.

The store’s design also incorporates elements of British heritage. Custom houndstooth fabric from the esteemed fabric house Holland & Sherry covers some of the lounge chairs, blending art deco and modern aesthetics in a manner that reflects Blahnik’s history and style.

When asked about his favorite new offerings, Blahnik highlighted the Trulona boot, a striking patchwork of tonal animal prints, along with detailed designs in the Alo and Mabecomu shoes, featured in bold seasonal colors.

Blahnik stated that his focus remains on craftsmanship rather than fleeting trends, explaining that his timeless styles are built with comfort in mind. “You can only feel confident in the pieces you wear if they are comfortable; it’s the most important thing,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Blahnik indicated an exciting future for the brand, noting a recent sponsorship of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Marie Antoinette Style exhibition and the opening of a new boutique in Milan, where the brand’s shoes are handcrafted.
