Charlie Day Shares Exciting Details About Season 18 of ‘It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’ Featuring Guillermo Del Toro and the McPoyles in Big Episodes
"It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" Gears Up for Season 18 with Exciting Returns
As filming for the new season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia progresses, actor Charlie Day expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming episodes. "We’re right in the middle of the new season right now. I’ve got to go back tonight, and I’m going to film tomorrow," he shared. The new season promises the return of fan-favorite characters, including the eccentric McPoyles and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who will reprise his role as Pappy McPoyle.
Day detailed the ambitious scope of the new season, stating, “They’re all fairly large episodes. But I feel like Season 17, we got a bit of our fastball back, and we brought back the same room and had the same chemistry. So Season 18 here, I think, is going to just pick up right where we left off. I can guarantee there will be some episodes that people will love.”
Now officially the longest-running live-action sitcom in television history, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is an FX comedy that follows a group of narcissistic friends—portrayed by Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito—and their chaotic escapades while managing the struggling Philadelphia dive bar, Paddy’s Pub.
The McPoyles, known for their bizarre antics, frequently clash with the show’s main characters. Brothers Ryan and Liam McPoyle, played by Nate Mooney and Jimmi Simpson, are the unsettling duo, with Del Toro first appearing as Pappy in the Season 8 episode “The Maureen Ponderosa Wedding Massacre.” His initial appearance in 2012 was followed by a return in 2016, marking the character’s enduring impact on the series.
It’s Always Sunny premiered its 17th season last July, although a debut date for Season 18 has yet to be announced.
In addition to his work on Sunny, Day is currently present at the SXSW festival to promote his starring role in Kill Me, a darkly comedic whodunnit that also premiered at the Austin event. Interviews with Day, co-stars Allison Williams and Giancarlo Esposito, along with filmmaker Peter Warren, are forthcoming.
