Sarah Michelle Gellar Shares Kathryn Newton’s Tribute to ‘Buffy’ in ‘Ready or Not 2’
Nearly 30 years after its debut, actress Kathryn Newton is making waves in Hollywood, showcasing her talent while paying homage to a legendary character.
In the upcoming horror sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, her co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed that Newton has subtly included a nod to Gellar’s iconic role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The film is set to premiere in theaters on March 20, following its debut at SXSW next month.
“What’s really funny is I didn’t know any of this,” Gellar shared with Entertainment Tonight. “So, Kathryn brought in a picture of Buffy in this outfit. She had sort of had this idea of what it was.”
The outfit referenced by Gellar is from the pilot episode, “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” which first aired on March 10, 1997. In that episode, Buffy sports a blue button-down shirt over a white tank top, complemented by a messy updo and wispy bangs.
Gellar recounted, “And then I’m in the first scene with her, and I was like, ‘You know, your outfit reminds me of something.’ And she was like, ‘Does it?’ And so, I have a great side-by-side. Yeah, the hairdo is exactly the same.”
Originally created by Joss Whedon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer enjoyed a successful seven-season run from 1997 to 2003 on The WB and UPN, with Gellar portraying the fearless Valley Girl who battles evil while navigating everyday life. Gellar will reprise her role in the pilot for Hulu’s continuation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.
In Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Grace (played by Samara Weaving) faces the aftermath of her actions from the first film, where she dispatched her groom and the Le Domas family. Now reunited with her estranged sister Faith (Newton), she must confront a new group of affluent killers, portrayed by Gellar, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, and David Cronenberg, with Elijah Wood in the role of the satanic cult’s lawyer.
