Couple in Shadow Hills Creates Popular Barn Owl Box That Captivates Global Audience
Shadow Hills Couple Attracts Global Audience with Barn Owl Box
LOS ANGELES – In an innovative approach to natural pest control, Debbie and Dana Smith of Shadow Hills have drawn international attention through a barn owl box equipped with cameras. Initially aimed at managing the local rat population, the couple’s endeavor has evolved into a captivating wildlife spectacle.
The barn owls, affectionately named Barney and Betty, are the stars of the "Friends of Shadow Hills Barn Owl Box" Facebook page, which has attracted followers from around the globe. Their nesting journey has already produced 22 hatchlings, including a firstborn named Bam Bam, and has been marked by both heartwarming moments and unexpected drama, such as an encounter with a raven.
"Barn owls are wonderful," Dana remarked, emphasizing their desire to let nature take its course. However, he recalled a critical moment when one of the owls returned with a rat caught in a glue trap, a situation that prompted human intervention. The glue quickly began to cover Betty’s face, risking the safety of the hatchlings. “I got myself up that ladder and got it out!” Dana recounted, stressing the importance of secure trap installation to prevent similar incidents.
Debbie addressed the broader issue of rodent control methods, advocating against the use of poison. "At least it’s not rat poison," she stated, highlighting the risks that poisoned rats pose to owls and other wildlife. "If owls were not being poisoned, they’d eat a lot more of those rodents people are trying to get rid of," she added.
While the couple shares updates and live footage of their owls, Dana expressed interest in enhancing their broadcast capabilities. "We’d love someone to help us set up a YouTube feed so more people can follow," he explained, currently utilizing a Ring setup for their livestream.
As the fascination with their barn owls grows, neighbors have reached out for assistance in constructing their own owl boxes. Dana remarked on their charm, saying, "They may not be as majestic as Jackie and Shadow," referring to well-known eagles in Big Bear, "but they are certainly entertaining, and we love them." The couple hopes their experience inspires others to embrace wildlife-friendly solutions for pest control.
