San Bernardino Detective Shares Experience After Pursuing and Stopping Murder Suspect
Off-Duty Detective Intervenes in High-Speed Pursuit, Aiding Arrest of Murder Suspect
In October, an off-duty detective played a crucial role in halting a dangerous high-speed chase involving a motorcyclist suspected of fatally shooting a San Bernardino County deputy. The incident unfolded on the 210 Freeway in Upland, with the suspect reportedly traveling at speeds nearing 200 miles per hour.
Detective Shaun Wallen, with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, took decisive action to end the pursuit. He maneuvered his vehicle to clip the motorcycle, causing the suspect to crash and enabling law enforcement to take him into custody.
“I basically heard what was going on. I was in a position to do something, and I did,” Wallen stated. He emphasized that being off duty does not negate his commitment to public safety. “As police officers, off duty doesn’t always mean off duty.”
The suspect, Angelo Jose Saldivar, is charged with the murder of Deputy Andrew Nunez, who died on October 27 while responding to a domestic violence call involving Saldivar. In addition to the murder charge, Saldivar faces felony evasion charges for fleeing from deputies to avoid arrest.
Wallen has been recognized for his bravery on multiple occasions and received dual law enforcement honors for his actions during this incident. His history of heroism includes participation in the takedown of the suspects responsible for the 2015 San Bernardino terror attack, which left 14 people dead and 22 injured.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Wallen recalled the chaotic scene, saying, “There was a large volley of gunfire. I remember the male suspect running from the front of the car.” In recognition of his service, Wallen and his colleagues were awarded the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor by President Donald Trump in 2018.
Despite the accolades, Wallen remains humble, expressing discomfort with the label of "hero." “Law enforcement, in my opinion, is a very humble noble profession,” he remarked. He believes that those in the field are motivated by a commitment to serve the public and support their colleagues.
Wallen underscores the importance of integrity in his role: “We have an obligation to protect the public and partners, just like we have obligations to protect our families.”
