Zootopia 2 Hits $1 Billion at the Box Office, Setting a New Record for Animated Films
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2 is set to surpass the $1 billion mark globally, with current box office numbers indicating a total of $986.1 million through Thursday. This figure includes $232.7 million from domestic markets and $753.4 million from international sales. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, the sequel is positioned to become the second film to reach $1 billion in 2025, following Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. It also marks a record-setting pace, achieving this milestone in only 17 days, making it the fastest animated film and PG-rated title to do so.
This achievement represents a significant moment for Walt Disney Animation Studios, marking its first consecutive billion-dollar releases, following last year’s success with Moana 2. Since 2013, the studio has amassed five billion-dollar films: Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana 2, Zootopia, and Zootopia 2.
“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination and incredible thoughtfulness,” said Bush, Chief Creative Officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios. “This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen, everyone together, from all walks of life around the world – and that is a Zootopia dream come true.”

The film’s characters, Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman), have received significant acclaim in China, where Zootopia 2 achieved the largest animated opening for a non-local title, grossing $272 million. Within just five days, it became the highest-grossing non-local animated film in that market and stands as the No. 2 MPA release of all time in China, with an estimated $447.2 million to date. Walt Disney Studios now holds three of the top five highest-grossing MPA titles ever released in the country.
Following China, France ($29.6 million), Korea ($28.5 million), Mexico ($20.9 million), and Germany ($17.7 million) are the top overseas markets contributing to the film’s success.
As Zootopia 2 continues its successful theatrical run worldwide, its box office performance has also spurred renewed interest in the franchise. This has resulted in record viewership for Zootopia and Zootopia+ on Disney+, with the titles collectively racking up over 725 million hours of viewing time globally.
