Zack Snyder Shares Henry Cavill’s Superman Test Photos in the Classic Suit
Zack Snyder reflected on his journey with Superman this Christmas Day, sharing a pair of nostalgic photos featuring actor Henry Cavill.
Snyder, known for directing Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League, posted images that he described as showcasing “the original Superman suit.” He likely meant the initial suit Cavill tried on for Man of Steel, rather than the outfit worn by Kirk Alyn, who portrayed Superman in 1948.
Cavill first appeared as Superman in the 2013 film Man of Steel, which grossed over $668 million worldwide. He reprised the role in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, with the combined earnings of these three films nearing $2.2 billion.
The first image shared by Snyder features Cavill in a suit, appearing contemplative against a bright blue sky, likely captured during a test shoot.

In the caption, Snyder noted, “The original Superman suit.” He followed with, “This photo. It was undeniable.”
The second image provides a closer view of the suit, revealing its classic elements, including a yellow belt and red shorts.
Snyder emphasized the significance of these images, stating, “With the last image I shared, and this one we showed WB, everyone agreed: Henry Cavill was Superman. That’s where the journey began. -Merry Christmas,” he added.
The suit depicted in Snyder’s images differs considerably from the sleek costume Cavill donned in Man of Steel, which featured a scaled texture and darker colors, and notably lacked the iconic belt and shorts.

In 2022, Cavill expressed his emotions about donning the Superman suit once more for Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.
“I went to Warner Bros.’ studio in the UK and got back in the suit,” Cavill shared during a talk at the 92nd Street Y. “It was a very powerful moment for me. I wasn’t sure how I would feel…” He went on to describe the significance of the moment, linking it to the nostalgia he felt for the suit, calling it “one of the top moments in my career.”
However, mere weeks later, director James Gunn announced that he was developing a new Superman script focused on the character’s younger years, indicating that Cavill would not reprise his role.
Cavill confirmed the news on social media, stating he had recently met with Gunn and producer Peter Safran. “My turn to wear the cape has passed,” he wrote, adding, “but what Superman stands for never will.”
