YouTube TV’s Skinny Bundle: Complete Pricing and Sports Channel Lineup Explained
YouTube TV has unveiled new pricing and details for its slimmed-down programming bundles, aimed at specific content categories like sports, news, and entertainment.
Among the more than ten packages set to launch this year, the sports-focused bundle has garnered significant attention due to the pivotal role live sports play in pay-TV economics. Priced at $64.99 per month, the bundle is offered at a discounted rate of $54.99 for the first year to new subscribers, as announced by the company on Monday in a blog post. The rollout of these packages is expected to begin this week.
While the sports roster is extensive, notable omissions include MLB Network and Tennis Channel, which may disappoint some sports enthusiasts. However, the inclusion of NBC Sports Network is likely to enhance the sports offerings available on Peacock, following NBCUniversal’s decision to revamp the channel to link linear television with its streaming platform.
In a similar timeframe, DirecTV and Comcast have introduced comparable sports-centric bundles at similar price points.
Now serving over 10 million subscribers, YouTube TV had previously announced plans for these new packages last year. This initiative gained traction as YouTube forged distribution deals with major media companies, including Disney and TelevisaUnivision, following service disruptions. Agreements were also reached with Fox Corp. and NBCUniversal, albeit amid warnings of potential service blackouts to viewers.
The standard YouTube TV plan remains priced at $82.99 per month, reflecting a 28% increase since 2023 due to two price hikes.
Many carriage disputes arise from the conflict between escalating programming costs and operators’ efforts to keep prices from alienating customers. Despite YouTube TV’s cost rising from $35 per month at its launch in 2017, the platform has added features such as Multiview, unlimited DVR, and a user-friendly interface while also offering financial incentives like discounts on NFL Sunday Ticket. These strategies have helped sustain its growth despite increasing prices.
In addition to the Sports plan, YouTube TV is launching Sports + News at $71.99 per month, which includes sports channels along with CNBC, Fox News, MS Now, CNN, CSPAN, and other news and business networks. The Entertainment Plan, priced at $54.99, is tailored for fans of cinema and comedy, featuring networks like FX, Hallmark, Comedy Central, Bravo, and Food Network. For $69.99, the News + Entertainment + Family Plan adds channels such as Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network.
All available plans offer varying discounts for new subscribers.
