Woman Identified After Falling from Cruise Ship Balcony Near Catalina Island
Los Angeles Medical Examiner Identifies Passenger Who Died After Fall from Carnival Firenze
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has confirmed the identity of a 24-year-old woman who tragically died after falling from the balcony of her stateroom on the Carnival Firenze near Catalina Island early Monday morning.
Briana Miller fell from her balcony and landed on a lower deck. The circumstances surrounding her fall remain unclear at this time. Miller was traveling with her family, who promptly alerted the ship’s crew following the incident.
In a statement, Carnival spokesperson Julie Leonardi expressed condolences, stating, "Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones." She also noted that "all appropriate authorities have been alerted," with law enforcement officers scheduled to board the ship while it was docked at Catalina Island.
The FBI has confirmed that it is investigating Miller’s death, although the Medical Examiner’s office has yet to release details regarding the specific manner and cause of death.
The Carnival Firenze was on a four-night cruise that included stops at Catalina Island and Ensenada, and the incident occurred before the ship reached Catalina.
Amber Reinhold, a fellow passenger, shared her experience of learning about the tragedy, noting that communication from the crew was limited. "A couple of staff members said a young lady was with her family and had fallen from her balcony," Reinhold recalled. "In order to fall over this railing, I’m 5’9 and it’s up to my rib cage; you would have to be sitting on the railing."
The Carnival Firenze, an Italian-themed ship, features various Italy-inspired bars and restaurants, as well as "Terrazza staterooms," described as stylish and comfortable accommodations with access to a private deck.
