Wildlife Advocate Behind Big Bear Valley’s Beloved Eagle Nest Camera Passes Away
Southern California Wildlife Activist Sandy Steers Passes Away
Sandy Steers, a prominent wildlife activist in Southern California, has died, as confirmed by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV). Her passing occurred on the evening of February 11, and has deeply affected those who knew her and her work.
Steers was widely recognized for her dedication to bald eagles, particularly the well-known pair Jackie and Shadow that reside in a nest situated 145 feet high in a Jeffrey pine tree in Big Bear Valley. Friends of Big Bear Valley announced her death through a heartfelt post on social media, expressing their sadness and noting that more details would be shared later while allowing time for grief.
"It is with heavy hearts and great sadness to let our Friends of Big Bear Valley eagle family know that Sandy Steers passed away on the evening of 2/11/26," the organization shared on Instagram. Accompanying the message were two photographs of Steers, showcasing her vibrant spirit—one with her arms extended against a piece of art featuring eagle wings, and another where she is speaking into a microphone.
As a key member of FOBBV’s leadership team, Steers played an integral role in launching live-stream cameras in 2015, which offered viewers a unique glimpse into the lives of Jackie and Shadow. She became a respected expert on bald eagles, advocating for their conservation and educating the public about their natural habitat within the San Bernardino National Forest.
Fans of FOBBV took to social media to express their condolences. One user poignantly remarked, "This feels almost like California lost its very own Jane Goodall. Our deepest condolences to her family and conservation colleagues." Another post echoed the sentiment, stating, "What a huge loss for the community."
The impact of Steers’ work resonated across various platforms, with many highlighting her devotion to wildlife preservation. "The wonderful eagle whisperer Sandy," one tribute stated. "Her heart and love for the precious eagles is an amazing legacy. I am so sorry for the FOBBV team’s loss."
Currently, attention remains focused on the FOBBV Eagle Nest camera as Jackie and Shadow prepare their nest for the possibility of a new clutch of eggs this season. After laying two eggs in January, the couple faced a setback when ravens breached their nest. However, FOBBV remains hopeful for a recovery, emphasizing that there is still time for Jackie to lay additional eggs.
The loss of Sandy Steers marks a significant moment for the Friends of Big Bear Valley and the wildlife community at large, as they remember her passion for education and conservation.
