Why Amy Madigan, 75, Chooses to Embrace Aging Without Plastic Surgery
Amy Madigan Discusses Aging and Personal Choices at New York Film Critics Circle Awards
At 75, actress Amy Madigan remains steadfast in her decision to forgo cosmetic surgery despite industry pressures. Speaking exclusively to Page Six at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, she shared her perspective on external opinions regarding appearance.
“I don’t listen to any of that,” said Madigan, known for her roles in “Field of Dreams” and “Uncle Buck.” She added, “People are very entitled to have an opinion, but that’s just not me. I don’t have any problem with anybody doing what they want, but not for me.”
Madigan, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film “Weapons,” acknowledged a disparity in the opportunities available to her and her husband, actor Ed Harris, as they age. However, she expressed no bitterness towards the situation, saying, "It’s more difficult to navigate when you get older. But, no, I don’t do that to myself.”
Harris has been a constant source of support for Madigan throughout their relationship. Reflecting on his encouragement, she recounted, “My husband was always kind of telling me, ‘You just wait. You’re in a perfect spot right now, and something really great is going to come along for you.’” Initially skeptical of his optimism, Madigan now finds herself thriving in the role she secured in “Weapons,” a mystery horror film featuring a cast that includes Josh Brolin and Julia Garner.
Madigan’s recent recognition follows her heartfelt acceptance speech, introduced by Gaby Hoffmann, her co-star from “Field of Dreams.” Hoffmann charmed the audience with anecdotes about their past collaboration, sharing fond memories of Madigan’s nurturing presence on set while humorously recalling her childhood infatuation with co-star Ray Liotta.
As Madigan continues to embrace her age and career, she stands as a testament to authenticity in an industry often swayed by beauty standards.
