The late 1990s marked a resurgence of animal horror films, beginning with 1997’s Anaconda and followed by titles like Lake Placid and Deep Blue Sea in subsequent years.
Anaconda featured stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Ice Cube. The film follows an ill-fated expedition in the Amazon jungle that confronts a giant man-eating anaconda.
The film was a substantial box office success, earning over $136 million globally and establishing Lopez as one of Hollywood’s top stars. Since its release, Anaconda has spawned three sequels, a crossover with Lake Placid, a remake, and now, a meta reboot featuring Jack Black and Paul Rudd.
In a March 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Black commented that the upcoming film is “a lot funnier than the original,” while retaining the horror elements. “It’s a horror film for real, but it’s also got some clownin’ for sure,” he added.

In the original Anaconda, a group traveling through the Amazon encounters a grifter played by Jon Voight, who complicates their journey. Their situation worsens when they encounter the deadly, massive anacondas.
In a 2021 interview with SiriusXM, Wilson revealed a reunion of original cast members occurred on the set of his romantic comedy Marry Me, where he shared the screen with fellow Anaconda alum Lopez. “Jon Voight was filming nearby us one day in Brooklyn,” Wilson recounted. “He came over to visit, so you had all three of us there, which was very much an Anaconda reunion that day.”
