What You Need to Know About Athlete Accommodations for the LA28 Games
UCLA to Host Athlete Village for 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games
As Los Angeles gears up for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is preparing to transform its campus into the Athlete Village. LA28 officials anticipate that approximately 15,000 athletes will participate in over 800 events spanning more than 40 sports.
UCLA, encompassing over 400 acres in Westwood, previously served as the residential hub for athletes during the 1984 Olympics. At that time, the university accommodated around 4,000 athletes. In contrast, the upcoming event will require facilities to support more than three times that number.
Fortunately, the housing situation is less daunting now, thanks to a significant housing boom in the area over the last four decades. This development has improved the university’s ability to host a larger contingent of athletes and coaches.
Another crucial element of the planning involves food services. Joey Martin, UCLA’s senior executive chef, noted that the Olympic Committee raised concerns about dining options during a site visit four years ago. “They were saying, ‘Well, we’re not sure. You have the infrastructure, you have the beds and everything, but what about the food?’” Martin recalled.
Impressed with UCLA’s dining facilities, the Committee found assurance in the university’s plans to serve around 42,000 meals each day during the Games. Martin expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, stating, “We embrace it. We’re looking forward because it’s world-class athletes that come here, but there’s world-class students that are here already.”
In addition to residential accommodations, UCLA’s facilities will include fitness centers, TV lounges, and other amenities for the athletes. With just over two years until the Games, preparations at UCLA are well underway, as the dining staff finalizes their culinary offerings. They even plan to test the viral chocolate muffin from the 2024 Paris Olympics with the student body.
As the countdown continues, UCLA is poised to play a vital role in this historic global event.
