This gesture was in honor of Renee Nicole Good, the 37-year-old woman who was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on January 7. The awards ceremony served as a platform for Sykes and other celebrities to express solidarity and raise awareness about recent events surrounding immigration enforcement.
During an interview on the red carpet, Sykes highlighted the significance of her pin. “Of course, this is for the mother who was murdered by an ICE agent, and it’s really sad," she stated. She acknowledged the ongoing demonstrations and emphasized the importance of speaking out. "We need to be out there and shut this rogue government down, because it’s just awful what they’re doing to people,” she told Variety.
Sykes’ statement reflects broader concerns regarding ICE operations amid heightened scrutiny and public outcry, particularly given the agency’s intensified actions in the wake of political rhetoric surrounding immigrant communities. The official campaign associated with the "BE GOOD" pins aims to honor Renee Macklin Good and Keith Porter, another victim of an off-duty ICE officer who was also killed on December 31. The campaign’s description underscores the values of community support and mutual respect in the face of adversity. It articulates a vision of what it means to be good citizens and advocates for societal compassion.
“With regular people everywhere working to keep others safe and supporting important causes, the #BeGood campaign emerges in the wake of reports that 2025 was among ICE’s deadliest years in two decades,” the initiative states. It calls attention to a $100 million recruitment drive by the current administration aimed at expanding ICE’s enforcement capabilities.
Organizations backing the #BeGood initiative include Marmot, Move On, the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Working Families Power, and leaders from various sectors within the entertainment industry. Mark Ruffalo was also spotted wearing the pin at the event, further promoting the message of solidarity.
