Vorteks Boards Sees Success at SXSW with Horror Film ‘Grind’ – Cannes Market Update
Vorteks Acquires International Rights for Horror Satire ‘Grind’
Vorteks, the genre-focused label of Dubai-based sales agency Cercamon, has secured the international rights outside North America for “Grind,” a horror satire directed by Brea Grant and Ed Dougherty. This acquisition follows the film’s successful debut in the Midnighter section at SXSW last month.
“Grind” delves into the anxieties of contemporary work life through the experiences of four interconnected characters: a multi-level marketing employee, a food delivery driver, a content moderator, and a coffee shop staff member facing challenges in their efforts to unionize at a well-known brand.
The film features a unique structure, with its premise serving as a linking device rather than a central theme. “The narrative is segmented into disparate chapters…creating a believable world with recurring characters and in-jokes that keep the wildly divergent plot on track,” a reviewer noted.
Launched last year, Vorteks aims to release up to eight genre films annually, encompassing horror, thriller, sci-fi, action, and fantasy. David Kwok, Partner in Acquisitions & Sales at Vorteks, shared the company’s mission: “Vorteks was launched to bring unique voices working in genre to the international stage.” He expressed confidence that Grant and Dougherty’s vision aligns with this goal, highlighting the film’s blend of dark humor and horror as relatable in today’s societal landscape.
“Grind” is produced by Squirrel Park and Chelsea Stardust, who also co-directs, alongside executive producers Chris Alender, Dave Smith, Grant, Dougherty, and Tarek Kutrieh. The cast includes Christopher Marquette, Vinny Thomas, Aubrey Shea, Jessika Van, Rob Huebel, and Barbara Crampton. North American sales are being managed by Yellow Veil Pictures.
In a joint statement, Grant and Dougherty expressed their excitement about partnering with Vorteks: “We’re thrilled to partner with Vorteks and bring our labor of love to international audiences. We believe it is a film that resonates with anyone who has felt crushed by the system, and we can’t wait for more people to connect with it.”
