Vicky Krieps Stars as Rooney Mara’s Partner in Parisian Romance ‘Quest for Love’ at Cannes Market
EXCLUSIVE: Vicky Krieps, known for her role in Phantom Thread, will star alongside Oscar nominee Rooney Mara in the Paris-set drama Quest For Love. The film is currently being marketed by HanWay at the Cannes market.
Written and directed by Antonia Campbell-Hughes, whose previous work includes It Is in Us All, the film features Mara as Maris, a character described as “dancing on the edge of subversion and violence.” Maris embarks on a journey of emotional discovery, exploring her capacity for love through her relationship with her estranged ten-year-old son, Maxy. However, her nighttime behavior suggests a latent violence lurking beneath her complex persona.
Krieps, a European Film Award winner who recently appeared in Ryan Murphy’s Monster, plays Alex, Maris’s devoted former flame. As their relationship rekindles, the developing bond between Alex and Maxy forces a perilous choice between maternal instinct and romantic obsession.
The film is produced by Macdara Kelleher and John Keville of Wild Atlantic Pictures, with Mara also serving as an executive producer. WME Independent is managing North American sales.
Campbell-Hughes has recently completed production on her second feature, High End, starring Andrea Riseborough, Guy Pearce, and Raffey Cassidy.
Gabrielle Stewart, CEO of HanWay Films, commented, “Cinema has created many magnetic and iconic characters who dance on the edge of subversion and violence, from American Psycho to Silence of the Lambs, but few are women. Antonia and Rooney have a very clear vision to challenge us with the iconic character of Maris. Vicky Krieps is a perfect addition to the cast as she plays such a pivotal role in its exploration of maternal instinct and obsession. Vicky and Rooney together will deliver all the complexity needed to this astonishing and fresh exploration of violence and womanhood.”
Quest For Love was developed as part of a joint initiative by Screen Ireland and the Luxembourg Film Fund to support female and non-binary filmmakers, which was launched at Cannes in 2023.
Vicky Krieps is represented by United Agents, CAA, and Agence Adequat.
