USC Postpones Basketball Game with Brown Following Campus Shooting
USC Cancels Upcoming Men’s Basketball Game with Brown Following Campus Tragedy
In a compassionate response to recent events, the University of Southern California (USC) has announced the cancellation of its men’s basketball game against Brown University, scheduled for this Sunday at the Galen Center. The decision comes in light of a tragic mass shooting that occurred on Brown’s campus, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to nine others.
USC communicated its decision on Tuesday morning, expressing solidarity with Brown and those affected by the incident. In a statement, the university noted that it plans to identify a new opponent to fill the Sunday schedule slot.
The matchup was expected to be the Trojans’ final nonconference game of the season, where USC currently boasts an impressive 9-0 record outside of Big Ten play.
The game cancellation means Brown will now seek a different opponent for their first matchup following the tragedy. USC’s women’s basketball coach, Lindsay Gottlieb, a Brown alumna, shared heartfelt reflections on the incident after her team’s recent loss to top-ranked Connecticut. She recounted a harrowing experience involving a former teammate whose daughter was taking refuge from the gunman in a library basement during the game.
"It doesn’t need to be this way," Gottlieb remarked. "Sending thoughts and prayers to my teammates who have kids there. To the parents that have to worry about their children, I’m just going to end it with that, but just to say we’re the only country that lives this way."
As the situation unfolds, the implications of such violence continue to resonate within the sports community and beyond, prompting discussions about safety and the need for change.
