UCLA Welcomes James Madison Running Back Wayne Knight as a Key Transfer addition
UCLA Football Secures Transfer Running Back Wayne Knight Amid Rebuilding Efforts
UCLA has made a significant addition to its football program with the transfer of running back Wayne Knight from James Madison, a move that is expected to accelerate Coach Bob Chesney’s rebuilding efforts.
Knight announced his decision to join the Bruins on Wednesday, bringing with him a notable track record as a formidable player. Last month, he showcased his skills on a national stage, rushing for 110 yards on 17 carries against Oregon during the College Football Playoff, marking his fifth 100-yard game of the season. His impressive performance contributed to his selection as a first team All-Sun Belt Conference player.
Standing at 5-foot-6 and weighing 189 pounds, Knight combines speed and resilience, making him a tough competitor. He led the Sun Belt Conference with 1,357 rushing yards, complemented by 40 receptions for 397 yards. Additionally, he averaged 22.3 yards per kickoff return and 9.5 yards per punt return. With a record-setting 2,039 all-purpose yards, Knight earned recognition as an Associated Press second team All-American all-purpose player, ranking third nationally with an average of 145.6 all-purpose yards per game.
Heading into his redshirt senior season, Knight becomes the seventh player from James Madison to join Chesney at UCLA, alongside wide receiver Landon Ellis, defensive back DJ Barksdale, tight end Josh Phifer, edge rusher Aiden Gobaira, right guard Riley Robell, and offensive lineman JD Rayner.
UCLA has also secured verbal commitments from several other players, including Florida wide receiver Aidan Mizell and Iowa State running back Dylan Lee, among others.
Knight’s addition is particularly significant given his standout performance in the Sun Belt championship game, where he rushed for a career-high 211 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown, earning MVP honors in the Dukes’ 31-14 victory.
With Knight onboard, the Bruins appear to have found a key player to lead their backfield as they enter a new chapter under Chesney’s leadership.
