Trisha Yearwood Shares Insights on Songwriting Confidence
During a recent episode of Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam podcast, Trisha Yearwood discussed the invaluable support she receives from her husband, Garth Brooks, which has significantly boosted her confidence as a songwriter.
Yearwood, 61, explained that effective songwriting requires vulnerability. “You have to say the dumb thing,” she stated. “You have to go, ‘Hey, this might work here,’ and it might be the dumbest thing you’ve ever said.”
She emphasized that it’s essential to feel self-assured to handle the inevitable rejections that come with the writing process. “You have to feel good about yourself to be able to take that kind of rejection when you’re writing,” Yearwood remarked.
Brooks, 63, has been a key source of encouragement throughout her career. “He became one of my biggest cheerleaders,” Yearwood reflected. “He was the one who was saying, ‘Stop saying you’re not a writer. You’re a writer.’”
The couple’s differing writing styles were also a topic of discussion. Yearwood described herself as a Virgo who likes to write things down decisively, while Brooks tends to throw out lines that might later resurface after a period of dormancy. She noted that some of Brooks’ pieces have taken years to develop.
Despite these differences, the couple collaborates on music, recently releasing a duet titled “Merry Christmas, Valentine,” featured on Yearwood’s latest album Christmastime.
A Milestone Celebration
On December 10, Yearwood marked 20 years of marriage to Brooks. She shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, stating, “The very best part of the last 20 years has been you. Merry Christmas, Valentine. I love you. Trisha.” The post included an image of Brooks smiling as Yearwood gave him a kiss on the cheek.
While Brooks has not posted a dedicated tribute, he referred to himself as a “Proud husband” last month while promoting Yearwood’s holiday album.
Yearwood and Brooks were married in a private ceremony at their home in Oklahoma on December 10, 2005.
