Woman Dies After Medical Emergency While Diving Near Catalina Island
A 64-year-old woman tragically died Saturday morning following a medical emergency while diving off the coast of Catalina Island.
Los Angeles County fire crews and Avalon sheriff deputies were dispatched to the area near the Catalina Island Casino after receiving reports of a woman in distress.
The victim, identified as Carolyn Alvarez, was diving approximately 25 yards from shore near the Casino Point underwater park with a male companion. As they began to return to land, Alvarez showed signs of distress.
While the man assisted her back to shore, bystanders quickly called 911 and helped him administer aid. Paramedics transported Alvarez to a medical center on the island, where she was later pronounced dead.
The male companion was evaluated by emergency responders but did not require further medical treatment.
The LA County Medical Examiner’s office is currently investigating the official cause and manner of death but has indicated that foul play is not suspected.
