Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s engagement ring has re-entered public fascination as FX’s new limited series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, highlights the romance between the iconic couple. When John F. Kennedy Jr. proposed to Bessette over Fourth of July weekend in 1995, he presented her with an unconventional platinum eternity band adorned with alternating diamonds and sapphires.
The ring, a significant emblem of their love, mirrors the understated elegance Bessette was known for and recalls the minimalist design ethos that defined her style. JFK Jr. drew inspiration from a gold-and-emerald eternity ring owned by his mother, Jackie Kennedy, which she affectionately referred to as her “swimming ring” for its simplicity.
“It’s a copy of a ring [John’s] mother wore,” Bessette confirmed in a conversation with journalist Carole Radziwill, reflecting the poignant connection between the two women, despite Bessette never having met her mother-in-law, who passed away a year before their engagement.
