The Launch of ‘The Traitors’ Season 4 Draws 7 Million Viewers as BBC Kicks Off 2026 with a Bang
The BBC launched its New Year’s Day programming with significant fanfare, featuring the Season 4 premiere of The Traitors and the return of The Night Manager after a decade-long hiatus.
The Traitors attracted an average of 6.4 million viewers, peaking at nearly 7 million, matching the performance of the recent Celebrity Traitors season and surpassing the third season’s debut. The episode introduced a new group of contestants and included several surprising twists, engaging over one-third of the audience tuning in to television in the UK at that time.
The continued success of the Traitors franchise is evident. The celebrity edition had recently concluded, achieving notable popularity, particularly with comedian Alan Carr taking home the prize. The American version of Season 4 is set to debut on Peacock in just six days.
In what is considered one of the BBC’s most prominent New Year’s Day lineups in years, The Night Manager followed, premiering its second season exactly ten years after the original. It garnered 3.3 million viewers and peaked at 3.8 million, making it the fifth most-watched show of the day. While these numbers may appear modest, viewership is expected to increase significantly through catch-up on iPlayer.
Starring Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, and Camila Morrone, The Night Manager is adapted from the John le Carré novel and will be available on Prime Video in the U.S. in two weeks. The inaugural season in 2016 opened to 6 million overnight viewers, reflecting a different landscape for linear television viewing when streaming platforms were limited.
This New Year’s launch not only highlights the popularity of returning shows but also underscores the evolving consumption habits of television audiences.
