Taylor Swift’s Stylish Minidress and Playful Hair Clips Pay Homage to a Beloved ’90s Movie Makeover Scene
Taylor Swift Channels the ’90s in New Music Video
In her latest music video for the song "Opalite," Taylor Swift embraces a nostalgic ’90s aesthetic, showcasing a variety of retro-inspired outfits. Among these, one standout look features a striking red midi dress that alludes to the beloved 1999 film She’s All That.
In a key scene, Swift is seen preparing for a date night, wearing a red spaghetti strap minidress adorned with a double ribbon empire waist and a ruched scooped neckline. The ensemble is complemented by playful hair clips that frame her face, drawing attention to her cute brunette lob and curtain bangs.
Fans of ’90s teen cinema may recognize this outfit as a homage to Rachael Leigh Cook’s character in She’s All That. In an iconic moment from the film, Cook’s character undergoes a makeover, emerging in a similar red minidress. "May I present the new, not improved, but different—Laney Boggs," says her friend Mackenzie Siler, played by Anna Paquin, as she descends the stairs. This scene remains etched in pop culture history.
Swift’s music video was inspired by her appearance on The Graham Norton Show in October, where she invited fellow guests Greta Lee, Lewis Capaldi, Domhnall Gleeson, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cillian Murphy to participate in the creative project. Reflecting on the experience, Swift expressed her enjoyment: "I had more fun than I ever imagined—Made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices. It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters."
The video captures not only a playful homage to a famed cinematic moment but also showcases Swift’s ability to merge her musical artistry with rich cultural references.
