Takashi Yamazaki Shares a Sneak Peek of ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ at CinemaCon: A New Adventure for the Statue of Liberty
Director Takashi Yamazaki, who earned the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 2023 for Godzilla Minus One, unveiled details about his upcoming project, Godzilla Minus Zero, at CinemaCon.
"The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one," Yamazaki told attendees of the annual conference for exhibitors. "Right now, we are pouring all of our technology into this new story of desperation and hope to theaters around the world."
In Minus One, viewers witnessed post-war Japan grappling with the aftermath of Godzilla’s devastating assaults. Yamazaki noted that the new film would introduce an even deeper sense of despair, particularly affecting Japan and the Shikishima family.
The new footage shown at CinemaCon offered a glimpse of the monster’s looming threat over New York City; a particularly striking scene depicted Godzilla near the Statue of Liberty, prompting audible gasps from the audience at Caesars Palace’s Colosseum. The early previews presented a montage of the giant lizard both in and out of water, chaotic street scenes, scientists in laboratories, and a grieving mother, interspersed with behind-the-scenes glimpses of the director and cast.
GKids, now under Toho’s ownership, is planning a wide theatrical release across North America set to begin on November 6. Godzilla Minus One made a notable impact after opening with $11.4 million in the U.S. and subsequently exceeding $57 million at the domestic box office. A remastered black-and-white version was also screened for one week in late January 2024, following its initial release in Japan earlier that month.
