Stranger Things 5: Key Characters Who Make It to the End and Those Who Don’t
Stranger Things Concludes with an Emotional Finale
The beloved series Stranger Things wrapped up its run with a poignant two-hour finale on New Year’s Eve, marking the end of a decade-long journey for fans. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer focused on resolving lingering mysteries surrounding the Upside Down and the supernatural threats that have haunted Hawkins, Indiana, since November 6, 1983. The finale picks up right from Episode 7, “The Bridge,” thrusting characters into a final confrontation with the sinister Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower.
The plan was to launch a multi-faceted attack on Vecna, confronting him both mentally and physically in the Abyss. While the group faced various obstacles, they ultimately succeeded in defeating both Vecna and the Mind Flayer.
As the team attempts to escape, they are unexpectedly confronted by military forces. Meanwhile, Hopper (David Harbour) and Murray (Brett Gelman) have armed detonators, setting the stage for destruction as the bridge begins to collapse. In a tense moment, Mike (Finn Wolfhard) realizes Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is missing and rushes towards her. Despite being restrained by a soldier, Mike experiences a heartfelt farewell with Eleven, who insists on sacrificing herself to keep others safe from government experiments.
She pushes Mike out of her mental space just as the bombs explode, and the Upside Down begins to disintegrate.
Months later, the story shifts to a graduation scene where Mike, Will (Noah Schnapp), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Max (Sadie Sink), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) celebrate their achievements. Mid-Dungeons and Dragons campaign, Mike proposes a theory about their friend, suggesting that Eleven did not actually sacrifice herself. As he outlines his belief, flashbacks reveal that Eleven manages to escape the crumbling Upside Down with the help of her sister Kali (Linnea Berthelsen), who casts a final illusion before her demise.
The narrative transitions to show Eleven hiking in a mountain range, while Mike speculates that she found a small town to hide in. The group reflects on Mike’s theory, acknowledging their uncertainty but choosing to believe in their friend’s survival.
In an additional revelation, the Duffers confirmed that Ted Wheeler (Joe Chrest) is alive, alleviating concerns raised during earlier episodes when a Demogorgon attacked him at home.
Despite the harrowing confrontation with Vecna and the Mind Flayer, the main characters have navigated the chaos and emerged intact, leaving audiences with a sense of both closure and possibility.
