Spirit Awards Winners: Celebrating Early Honors for ‘Sorry, Baby,’ ‘The Secret Agent,’ and ‘Adolescence’
The 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards are taking place this afternoon at the Hollywood Palladium, celebrating the best in independent film and television. The ceremony recognizes outstanding achievements in the industry’s indie sector.
Film fans can watch the live event on YouTube, available on both IMDb’s and Film Independent’s channels, beginning at 2 p.m. PT.
This year’s event is hosted by former Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim and features a strong lineup in the Best Feature category. Notably, Netflix’s Train Dreams, a contender for four Oscars including Best Picture, is nominated alongside Janus Films’ Peter Hujar’s Day, which leads the nominations with five. Also in the mix are IFC’s The Plague, A24’s Sorry, Baby, and Roadside Attractions’ Twinless.
In total, Netflix earned the most nominations with 18, followed by A24 with 10. Highlights from the Oscars-Spirits crossover include Rose Byrne nominated for Best Performance in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and Adolpho Veloso nominated for Cinematography for Train Dreams.
Last year, Anora triumphed with three Spirit Awards—Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Actress for Mikey Madison—all of which the film went on to win at the Oscars.
The Spirit Awards have evolved over the years, moving their ceremony date from the day before the Oscars to a midpoint in the awards season. This year’s event marks the inaugural ceremony at the Palladium after years at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.
