Solo Mio Review: A Heartfelt Valentine’s Rom-Com with Kevin James on a Solo Honeymoon in Rome
This Valentine’s Day, female moviegoers have two prominent romantic options at the box office: Jacob Elordi and Kevin James.
While Elordi may heat things up in the upcoming adaptation of Wuthering Heights, James is set to make his mark this weekend with the romantic comedy Solo Mio. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Rome, this film offers a fresh take on the often-overlooked rom-com genre.

In Solo Mio, James portrays Matt Taylor, a teacher who falls for fellow educator Heather (Julie Ann Emery). After a whirlwind romance, Matt proposes in front of his students, setting the stage for a wedding in Rome and a special honeymoon. However, on their wedding day, Heather leaves him a letter declaring she cannot go through with it, leaving Matt heartbroken and alone during what should have been their honeymoon.
The script creatively navigates his journey as he befriends couples exploring Roman romantic sites, including Julian (Kim Coates) and Meghan (Alyson Hannigan), who are on their third marriage together, and Neil (Jonathan Roumie) and Donna (Julee Cerda), who attempt to lift his spirits. A budding connection with Gia (Nicole Grimaudo), a spirited barista, offers Matt a glimmer of hope and possibly new love.
This release from Angel Studios marks a shift from their usual focus on faith-based films, positioning Solo Mio as a more traditional romantic comedy. Though reminiscent of Netflix’s formula, the film’s stunning Roman scenery and engaging cast provide a notable theatrical experience for adult audiences often neglected in cinema.
Directed by brothers Charles and Daniel Kinnane, the screenplay credits Patrick and John Kinnane alongside Kevin James. This film showcases a different side of James, who balances comedy with a heartfelt portrayal of a man navigating newfound solitude. Grimaudo’s performance as Gia complements James well, while Coates’ comedic timing adds levity to the story. The film’s visual appeal is enhanced by Jared Fadel’s atmospheric cinematography.
