Simon Cowell to Help Create an Insightful Sky Documentary on ‘The X Factor’
Simon Cowell is set to play a significant role in an upcoming documentary produced by Sky, exploring the legacy of his entertainment phenomenon, The X Factor.
Sky announced the production of this “definitive documentary series,” which aims to delve into the impact and evolution of the show. Production will be handled by 72 Films, known for their work on the critically acclaimed Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story.
The documentary promises a rare on-screen contribution from Cowell himself, alongside insights from those “closest to the X Factor story,” both in front of and behind the camera, according to Sky.
Considered one of the biggest entertainment successes in the UK during the millennium, The X Factor experienced declining ratings before being officially canceled in 2021.
In recent years, the show has faced criticism, particularly from former contestants. Rebecca Ferguson and Lucy Spraggan have both vocalized their negative experiences on the program, with Spraggan alleging she was raped while filming in a hotel. Following her statement, ITV and Fremantle, co-producers of The X Factor, announced improvements to their duty of care processes.

Notably, 72 Films is also part of Fremantle, creating a unique scenario in which a documentary about a show within its portfolio is being produced.
Additionally, Cowell recently launched a new series, Simon Cowell: The Next Act, on Netflix late last year.
The documentary will be directed by Tim Lawton, known for 7/7: Homegrown Terror, with executive producers from 72 Films including Mark Raphael and Clare Cameron. Kate O’Hara will serve as the showrunner, while Hayley Reynolds and Bruce Fletcher will be the executive producers for Sky.
