Sierra Canyon Celebrates JuJu Watkins as Boys’ Team Triumphs Over Notre Dame
Sierra Canyon Secures Victory Against Notre Dame in JuJu Watkins Tribute Game
In a memorable evening dedicated to JuJu Watkins, one of Sierra Canyon’s most celebrated athletes, the boys’ basketball team achieved a thrilling 78-74 victory over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Friday night in Chatsworth. The game, broadcast live on ESPN2, showcased the Trailblazers’ talent and solidified their standing among the top teams in the nation.
Brandon McCoy was the standout performer for Sierra Canyon, scoring 21 points, complemented by his athletic dunks. Brannon Martinsen contributed 18 points, while North Carolina-bound Maximo Adams and Jordan Mize added 17 and 12 points, respectively. Despite trailing 33-28 at halftime, the Trailblazers rallied in the second half, beginning with a pivotal three-pointer from Mize that initiated a 9-0 run.
Ranked No. 1 in the Southland by The Times, Sierra Canyon improved to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in league play, marking their tenth consecutive win following a loss to Forestville (Md.) Bishop McNamara on December 6 at the Capital City Showcase in Washington, D.C.
For Notre Dame, NaVorro Bowman Jr. delivered an impressive performance, scoring a game-high 36 points, including a half-court shot that narrowed the score to 55-50 heading into the final quarter. He was supported by Zachary White, who scored 14 points as the Knights fell to 13-6 overall and 0-2 in league competition.
The night was particularly significant for Watkins, whose No. 12 jersey was retired during a halftime ceremony, making her the first Trailblazer to receive this honor. A standout player and the California Player of the Year for the 2021-22 girls’ basketball season, Watkins is now a prominent figure at USC.
“What makes JuJu special isn’t what she did but how she did it," remarked Sierra Canyon girls’ basketball coach Alicia Komaki. "She gave her heart to this place, she left her legacy, and this is a reminder of her excellence.”
Mize expressed his desire to follow in Watkins’ footsteps, hoping to see his own jersey among the gym’s honored numbers one day. “We talked about this being a big game and how there would be a big crowd,” he said. “I knew this was very important for JuJu, so I can’t let her down. We got it done but I think we’re still getting better.”
The event marked not only a significant victory for the boys’ team but also a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable athlete who has left an indelible mark on Sierra Canyon.
