Apple Renews ‘Platonic’ for a Third Season, Promising More Laughs from Rogen and Byrne
Apple has announced the renewal of its comedy series Platonic for a third season, allowing Sylvia and Will the opportunity to realize their dream of opening their Sh*tty Little Bar.
The decision comes on the heels of the conclusion of the second season, which aired its ten-episode run in October. Throughout this season, viewers followed the evolving friendship between Rose Byrne’s Sylvia and Seth Rogen’s Will as they navigated personal challenges, including Will’s wedding misfortunes and Sylvia’s burgeoning party career, alongside her tumultuous relationship with her husband, Charlie, portrayed by Luke Macfarlane.
In a notable guest appearance, Byrne’s real-life husband Bobby Cannavale joined the season finale as Brett Cayote, an action hero. The series also features Andrew Lopez as Will’s previous boss, Reggie, and Carla Gallo as Sylvia’s friend, Katie, who has a complicated relationship with Will. The [SPOILER ALERT] season finale wraps up with Sylvia and Will planning to open a bar together to circumvent a non-compete clause.
Created by Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, Platonic is produced by Sony Pictures Television, under Stoller’s overall deal with the studio. The series is executive produced by Byrne, Stoller, Delbanco, Conor Welch, along with Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver from Point Grey Pictures.
Rogen and Byrne play pivotal roles within Apple’s television lineup. Rogen’s show The Studio has recently been renewed for a second season after securing 13 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Rogen. Meanwhile, Byrne featured in the three-season run of Physical, created by Annie Weisman, and appeared in the Christmas movie Spirited.
Stoller and Delbanco expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating, “We couldn’t be more excited to get back into the world of Platonic with our amazing partners, Rose and Seth and Sony and Apple.”
Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV, praised the series, remarking, “Platonic is proof there is no duo better at making us belly laugh at mid-life crises than Seth and Rose. Nick and Francesca accomplished the rare feat of taking the show to the next level in season two, and, along with our partners at Sony, we can’t wait to see what they cook up for season three.”
