Search Continues for Missing Fisherman in Newport Beach
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Search teams and family members resumed their efforts along the Orange County coastline on Monday, five days after 42-year-old Lu Thu Tran, known as Tyler, disappeared near the Wedge, one of Southern California’s most treacherous surf spots.
Tran was last seen fishing on Christmas Eve morning, despite notably dangerous surf conditions. The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside Newport Beach Fire Department lifeguards and dive teams, has been scouring the waters, while relatives and volunteers have combatted rocky terrain with drones and flashlights in their search.
"We just want to find closure by at least finding his body," expressed Phong Ho, Tran’s brother. Family members traveled from out of state after his disappearance. A dedicated husband and father to a six-year-old daughter, Tran was visiting from Nevada for the holiday season. Tragically, Christmas Day would have marked his 43rd birthday.
Described by family as an experienced fisherman who had a deep love for the ocean, Tran was well aware of the risks presented by the conditions on the day he went missing. "He was a risk taker," Phong noted. Prior to heading out to fish, he communicated with his wife, mentioning the unfavorable weather.
Footage from Surfline cameras reportedly captured Tran grappling with the powerful waves moments before he seemingly lost his footing and fell into the water. "He was doing what he loved," Phong reflected. "But maybe he could have waited for a nicer day to do it."
While the family grapples with the uncertainty, they cling to hope, even as they prepare for the worst. They are urging anyone along the coastline, particularly near the Wedge, to remain alert and report any information that could aid in finding Tran.
"Please look out for our little brother," Phong implored. "Anyone here in Orange County, up and down the coast, please help us bring Tyler home."
