During an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, the 50-year-old musician and producer reflected on his role in preserving the legacy of his late father, John Lennon. He noted that this responsibility has become more urgent as cultural shifts continue to shape music consumption.
“To forget about it? I do, actually,” Sean admitted when asked if he believed younger audiences might eventually overlook The Beatles’ catalog. “And I never did before.”
While Sean acknowledged his new role as caretaker of his father’s work—following decades of stewardship by his mother, Yoko Ono—he emphasized that this legacy belongs to the broader community. “Obviously the world is also the custodian of his legacy,” he stated. “I’m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko. That’s how I look at it.”
The Beatles, which included Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the late George Harrison, are recognized as one of the most influential musical groups of all time. Their discography dramatically transformed popular music from their debut album, Please Please Me (1963), to Let It Be (1970). Still, Sean acknowledged the unpredictable nature of cultural relevance.
“My parents gave me so much that I think it’s the least I can do to try and support their legacy in my lifetime,” he shared. “I feel like I just owe it to them. It’s a personal thing.”
In 2023, Sean engaged with his parents’ work by co-releasing the animated short War Is Over!, inspired by John and Yoko’s 1971 song “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” which won an Academy Award.
Furthermore, Sean highlighted that the essence of his parents’ legacy is about more than idealism. “It’s peace and love,” he explained, “but it’s also an attitude toward activism that’s done with humor and love.”
